Planet Rehab's Hoedown 2016

Planet Rehab animal sanctuary celebrated it's fourth annual Hoedown on October 8th, 2016, and Gary Mitchell made it the best one yet.

Festive spirit was in the air, with people of all ages enjoying home-made chili and apple pie as Planet Rehab promotes sustainable lifestyle and healthy eating with a vegan apple pie and chili contest. Being vegetarian myself I really enjoyed some extra helpings of sweet, crisp apple pie and savory chili as I converse with people who are open-minded to pursuit of new ways of living to protect our home.

Many forward-thinking volunteers showed up to help with the event, making caramel apples and setting up a face-painting booth for visitors to get into the autumn spirit. bright-eyed kids with painted faces explored Planet Rehab's enclosures and learned about the many unique species living on our planet.

Hearing of our event some fantastic musical artists volunteered to perform, including Angelina Baez of America's Got Talent with her honey-sweet voice singing a strong country melody. Caris getting down with some country jams, and Surprise Anomaly from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory showing us how to really hoedown. Even Gary Mitchell, Planet Rehab's founder, joined the performers with his own vocal talent.

The fourth annual hoedown was a great success, people left in good spirits, more aware of what they could do to help our planet.

New Arrivals - May 2016

Houdini the Scarlet Macaw joined our family in May, 2016. At first he was a bit grumpy at the change of scenery, but with a little love he was soon part of the family. This rainbow-feathered friend was adopted from a family who could no longer give him the attention he needed after his primary owner passed away, so they contacted us to help. Houdini loves to give kisses and ride on shoulders. Scarlet Macaws, once found from Mexico throughout South America, are now endangered in their native habitats. Planet Rehab seeks to change this with our Costa Rica Endangered Species Project where we plan to breed species at risk of Extinction, including Scarlet Macaws, for release into our protected rainforest. You can help us with this goal by donating at www.planetrehab.org. You can also sponsor Houdini for a $50 a month contribution!

Peaches is a Goffin's Cockatoo adopted at the same time as Houdini. She is very friendly and polite, murmuring a 'hello' 'how are you?' and wonderful 'I love you' to those she knows. Peaches is a special needs bird due to an injury that she sustained when she was a chick. At Planet Rehab we strive to place her in different environments that will strengthen her feet and help her to become more mobile. She is as happy as can be now at Planet Rehab, she loves to hang out in the Birds of the World enclosure with the Cockatiels. Goffin's Cockatoos are native to Indonesia and are the smallest of the white cockatoo family and they can live to around 50 years old. As a result of deforestation to supply the world's palm oil needs, Goffin's Cockatoos, along with many other Indonesian species, are now threatened in their native lands. You can sponsor Peaches for a $50 a month contribution.

Caeser is a Pied Cockatiel adopted along with Houdini and Peaches. Caesar is definitely the shyest of the three, but will readily jump on your hand and adores kisses. He loves to eat lettuce and nap in the shade in the Birds of the World enclosure. Cockatiels are native to Australia and can live longer than 35 years in a happy home. You can sponsor Caesar for $25 a month.
